A Life Of Generosity Scripture: Matthew 6:19-21

  • generosity” = “a willingness to give or share without being stingy”; “to give freely”; “voluntary & unselfish giving of time, money, or resources”

Matthew 6:19-21 (CSB) 19 “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures[a] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I Tim. 6:18 (NLT) Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.

  1. Generosity Is More Spiritual Than Financial

Spiritual principles about financial giving…

  • Giving is an act of worship…not about money only.

Psalm 96:8 (NLT) Give to the Lord the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come into his courts. Phil. 4:18 (AMP) But I have received everything in full and more; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent me. They are the fragrant aroma of an offering, an acceptable sacrifice which God welcomes and in which He delights. Heb. 13:15-16 (NIV) 15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

  • Giving is to God through the church…not to the church.

Mal. 3:10-11 (CSB) 10 Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the Lord of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure. 11 I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not ruin the produce of your land and your vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the Lord of Armies.

  • Giving represents a lifestyle of surrender…not duty or legalism

James 1:17 (CSB) Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. II Corinthians 9:6-7 (NIV) 6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

  1. Generosity Is Always Blessed by God

Proverbs 11:25 (NIV) A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Luke 6:38 (NIV) Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Proverbs 22:9 (NASB 1995) He who is generous will be blessed, For he gives some of his food to the poor.

  • Steward” = “one who manages the affairs of another”

I Cor. 4:2 (NKJV) Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. Luke 16:10 (NIV) “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
