Walking in the Spirit

Gal. 5:25 (NASB 1995) If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

  • walk in the Spirit” = “yielding to the Holy Spirit’s control, following His lead, and allowing Him to exert His influence over us in everyday life.”

Gal. 5:25 (CSB) If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

  1. Be Assured About Receiving the New Life of Salvation

Titus 3:5 (NLT) he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.

Rom. 8:9 (CSB) You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.

  1. Practice a Lifestyle of Dying to Self

Matt. 16:24 (CSB) Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

  • Lay aside the patterns of your old life.

Eph. 4:22 (NASB 1995) that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit

    • lay aside” = “the idea of doing away with something, taking it off and putting it down.”

Heb. 12:1 (NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

  • Make choices consistent with your new life.

Eph. 4:23-24 (NLT) Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

  • We are a new creation…2 Cor. 5:17
  • We are no longer slaves to sin…Rom. 6:6
  • We are righteous…2 Cor 5:21
  • We are reconciled to God…Col. 1:22
  • We are free from condemnation…Rom. 8:1
  • Rely on the Holy Spirit to live through you.

Gal. 2:20 (NLT) My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  • When your good is evil spoken of, when your advice disregarded or your opinion ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart or even defend yourself…That is dying to self.
  • When you are content in every circumstance, with any trial or with any provision…That is dying to self.
  • When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation or record your own good works or seek after recognition, when you can truly love to be unknown…That is dying to self.
  • When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy, nor question God, while you are in desperate circumstances…That is dying to self.
  • When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit, finding no defensiveness or resentment rising up within your heart…That is dying to self.
