Food for Thought for the week of June 26, 2022

This weekend, Larry shared that our blessings are undeserved gifts from God. This week, we are going to exercise our gratitude muscles. Here are a few ideas of how to practice thankfulness, as well as additional verses to read and apply to our lives.

  1. Each day/night this week, make a list of 10 things you are thankful to God for from the day. Maybe have the list on your bedside table or in your car, somewhere easily accessible.

James 1:17 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

  1. Find a place (backyard, beach, favorite chair) where you can carve out space to talk to God. Spend some time there this week telling Him the things you are thankful for.

Psalm 100:4 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

  1. Set a timer for seven minutes. Name off, write down or somehow record as many names as possible of people you are grateful for in your life.

Philippians 1:3 3 I thank my God every time I remember you.

Look up the remaining verses. What do you notice about gratitude? Is there a practical way you can apply one of the verses to your life? What might you change or adjust to make this verse become a reality or regular practice? Who could benefit from you sharing one (or more) of these verses?

Colossians 2:6-7 New International Version (NIV) 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Colossians 3:16 New International Version (NIV) 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Colossians 4:2 New International Version (NIV) 2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Philippians 4:6 New International Version (NIV) 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 New International Version (NIV) 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
