Food for Thought for the week of July 3, 2022

In TJ’s sermon, we were encouraged that when we face battles, we can arm ourselves with humility, the courage to act and an acceptance of the outcome because, in the end, God wins the war. Look at the following verses. What do these passages of Scripture tell us about the purpose and importance of humility and how to develop it in our lives?

Proverbs 22:4 New International Version (NIV) 4 Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life.

**Romans 12:3 New International Version (NIV)** 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

James 4:10 New International Version (NIV) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

**Colossians 3:12 New International Version (NIV)** 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

1 Peter 5:5 New International Version (NIV) 5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Can you think of a time when you have thought of yourself more highly than you ought? What happened for you to come to this realization?

In what kinds of situations is it most challenging for you to be humble?

In your time this week talking to God, ask Him to show you any pride or lack of humility you might have. Ask Him if there is an area where you need to take up more courage and “do something” like the second point from TJ’s message. Pray that you would be given opportunities to be a force for the Lord and a light that helps others to see God at work. Thank Him for the reminder, yet again, that He (God) is the hero of this story and for the privilege it is to be a part of what He is doing to grow and expand His kingdom.
