Food for Thought for the week of January 8, 2023

  1. As we kick off our new series in the book of John, we will be exploring the question Chris posed in the title of this weekend’s message—who is the real Jesus? Jesus asks His disciples this million-dollar question in Mark 8:27-29. As you think about your faith journey, what would be your response today?

Mark 8:27-29 New International Version (NIV)

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”

What do you think your response would have been to Jesus’ question as a child or before you became a Jesus follower?

  1. As we’ll see throughout our new sermon series in the book of John, answering the most important questions about Jesus can be the difference between life or death. Look at 1 John 1:1-3 and note the evidence John gives for Jesus. Although our generation has not seen with our own eyes and touched with our own hands as John’s generation did, are there any ways in your life you have seen “evidence” of Jesus or the fellowship with Him John describes in these verses?

1 John 1:1-3 New International Version (NIV)

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  1. Wherever we are in our knowledge and understanding of who Jesus is, John highlights a lifestyle in 1 John 2:3-6 that will show us if we truly are Jesus followers. With this way of living in mind, is there an area in your life where you’d like to do better throughout 2023? How might those closest to you benefit from your renewed commitment to this area?

1 John 2:3-6 New International Version (NIV)

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
