Food for Thought for the week of March 26, 2023

  1. If the title of Damean’s message, “Can I Get A Witness?” had been posed to the writer of the book of Hebrews, perhaps his answer would be what we find in chapter 11. This chapter testifies how faithful men and women from the past trusted God with their lives despite the challenges they faced. Among the list of witnesses is a man named Moses. As you read his story of faith in verses 24-27, can you think of anything you’ve given up to follow Christ?

Hebrews 11:24-27 New International Version (NIV)

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

As you read the incredible acts listed in verses 32-34, have you seen God do great things for you because of your trust in Him? Did this surprise you or did you envision that’s how God would respond to your faith?

Hebrews 11:32-34 New International Version (NIV)

And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.

This chapter talks about the faithful stories of 17 men and women by name, as well as others who are unnamed. If the writer of Hebrews were to continue writing an account in the present day that includes your faith journey, what do you think would be written about you?

Are there any “witnesses” or faithful men and women who have impacted your own journey with Jesus? Take some time this week to thank God or those people for their faithfulness.

  1. With the witnesses from chapter 11 in mind, Hebrews 12:1-3 presents believers with instructions that can help strengthen their testimony for Christ. Who in your life would benefit from you following these instructions? What could it look like to run your race with them in mind?

Hebrews 12:1-3 New International Version (NIV)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
