Food for Thought for the Week of June 2, 2024

  1. Whether you grew up inside or outside the church, you likely heard that Jesus loves you and has a plan for your life. While this is true, Arnold reminded us this weekend in Revelation 6 that we should expect times of tribulation and persecution as part of God’s plan for our lives. As you reflect on Luke 9:23-24, what’s been the hardest tribulation or cross you’ve had to bear in following Jesus?

Luke 9:23-24 New International Version (NIV) Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

Read James 1:12. What are some benefits of applying this promise to current or future hardships and tribulations you may encounter? James 1:12 New International Version (NIV) Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

  1. Revelation 6 tells us we should expect tribulations to come, but what does Isaiah 14:24 and Isaiah 46:10 teach you about God remaining in control of all things?

Isaiah 14:24 New International Version (NIV) The Lord Almighty has sworn, “Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen. Isaiah 46:10 New International Version (NIV) I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.

How is your life different or better when you trust God’s sovereign control rather than your own?
  1. Arnold reminded us that prayer plays a significant role in helping us persevere through tribulation. What does your life look like when you follow Philippians 4:6-7 amid trials and hardships?

Philippians 4:6-7 New International Version (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

With June just beginning, what are some prayers and petitions you can present to God that will enable you to experience His peace this summer?
