Food for Thought for the Week of June 30, 2024

At the beginning of his message, Chris read from Zechariah 4. Let’s look at Zechariah 4:6 again: “‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”

“NOT BY MIGHT NOR BY POWER” In your personal experience, what is the hardest part of telling others about Jesus? Write down a few reasons why you might not want to share your faith.

  • Read Exodus 4:10-12. Even Moses had moments of insecurity regarding his ability to share the message God gave him, but God promised to give him the words to say. How does this promise from God speak to the reasons you gave for struggling to share your faith?

“BUT BY MY SPIRIT” Let’s look at some biblical examples of the Spirit of God at work. In Daniel 17, we see God rescue Daniel from a lion’s den without Daniel having to fight or defend himself. In 1 Samuel 17, we see a very young David conquering Goliath, not through his own skill, but through God’s power.

  • Does it encourage you to know that even famous bible characters had to rely on God–not their own abilities–to accomplish His plan? Does that change the way you view who God chooses to use?

THE WITNESSES: We see an interesting contrast as we look at the two witnesses in Revelation 11:3-12. They have power given to them by God, but they are also dressed in sackcloth – a garment that represents humility and repentance.

  • How does God’s power differ from positions of power we see in the world? How can Christians demonstrate God’s power with humility in our culture today?
