The Table

A Seat At The King's Table

By Pastor Mike Hernandez, November 01, 2026

MAIN SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 9:1–13

Four powerful truths about the grace of God—how His grace reaches us, welcomes us, restores us, and gives us a place to belong.

1. GRACE THE PROMISE

Scriptures:

  • 2 Samuel 9:1–4

  • 1 Samuel 20:14–17

  • Ephesians 2:4–9

  • David remembered his covenant with Jonathan.

  • Hesed — God's steadfast love, mercy, and covenant faithfulness.

KEY THOUGHT: “Grace is not God's response to our goodness. Grace is the expression of God's goodness toward us.”

Application: Where are we still trying to earn what Jesus has already provided?

2. GRACE US INTO THE KING'S PRESENCE

Scriptures:

  • 2 Samuel 9:5–8
  • Psalm 23:5
  • 2 Corinthians 10:3–5
  • Romans 8:1

KEY THOUGHT: “We didn't earn our seat at the King's table, and we don't have to let the enemy convince us that we don't belong there.”

Application: What lies, fears, or accusations have we allowed to influence our relationship with God? Three Questions When fear, shame, or condemnation enters our thinking, ask:

  1. Is this leading me toward Jesus or away from Him? The Holy Spirit convicts us so we can repent and grow. Condemnation seeks to leave us without hope.
  2. Does this agree with God's Word? Our feelings are real, but they don't determine what is true.
  3. What does obedience to Jesus look like right now? Respond through repentance, prayer, faith, Scripture, wise counsel, or a practical step of obedience.

3. GRACE WHAT WE COULD NOT RECOVER OURSELVES

Scriptures:

  • 2 Samuel 9:9–10
  • Ephesians 2:4–10

KEY THOUGHT: “Grace doesn't merely improve our circumstances. It changes our standing before God.”

Application: What area of our lives is God calling us to surrender and begin walking in renewed obedience?

4. GRACE US A PLACE TO BELONG

Scriptures:

  • 2 Samuel 9:11–13
  • Romans 8:15–17

KEY THOUGHT: “The greatest gift David gave Mephibosheth wasn't what was on the table. It was the relationship the table represented.”

Application — Three Ways Belonging Changes Our Lives

  1. Belonging changes how we pray. We approach God with the confidence of children who know their Father loves them.
  2. Belonging changes how we see ourselves. Our identity is established in Christ—not success, comparison, approval, or failure.
  3. Belonging changes how we welcome others. (next week)

THERE'S ROOM AT THE TABLE

  • The King remembers His promise.
  • The King extends His invitation.
  • The King transforms our lives.
  • The King welcomes us into His family.

FINAL DECLARATION: “Grace doesn't just give us a seat. Grace gives us a new way of life.”

THIS WEEK'S RESPONSE

Receive Grace: Stop trying to earn God's love and receive His forgiveness through Jesus.

Reject the Lies: Allow God's Word to define our identity rather than shame, fear, or condemnation.

Extend the Invitation: Show someone the same grace and hospitality we've received in Christ.
