Lack of mourning points to a numbness toward sin.

  1. BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN

    1. Mourn: To grieve, either the feeling or the action
    2. Mourn over your own sin
    3. Mourn over others sin
    4. Mourn over wickedness in power
    5. Warnings in Luke 6:25, Matthew 9:15
    6. Mourn your sin, mourn the devastation of the lives of others in sin.Mourn when we have wicked rulers in our government and around the world.
  2. THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED

    1. To be called to one's side
    2. God brings you near to Himself
    3. There is no comfort without mourning
    4. We must draw near to God when we come to mourning
  3. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS...JOY

  1. Joy: Inward joyfulness of the christian in the consciousness of the love of God
  2. Joy is often contrasted to mourning
  3. This follows the love of God
  4. Not determined by circumstances (as is happiness)
  5. The Fruit is given to us, not just for our help, but that we can exhibit that fruit to others. We can love others like God. Now we can show joy in the midst of our grief. We can show others God’s sufficiency in our need.
  6. We live in a tension between mourning and joy. Dr. Robertson McQuilken liked to say, “It is easier to go to a consistent extreme than to remain in the center of biblical tension
  7. How do you act when you mourn?
