Who is Jesus?

John 5:39

By Pastor Stewart McCarter, October 08, 2023

Introduction:

  1. Explain Jesus as the Son
    1. 4 statements on the trinity believed commonly among Evangelicals
      1. There is one and only one true and living God
      2. The one God eternally exists in three Persons — God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
      3. These three Persons are completely equal in attributes, each with the same divine nature.
      4. While each Person is fully and completely God, the Persons are not identical.
  2. The Nicene Creed
    1. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, tho only begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made
  3. The Westminster Confession
    1. In the unity of the Godhead there be three Persons of one substance, power, and eternity; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. The Father is of none, neither begotten nor proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son.
  4. Jesus in the OT (credit; Glen Scrivener)
    1. Patterned - All the stories in the Old Testamentary parts of the whole. They all paint a picture of the same pattern, the suffering and rising Christ 2. Promised - He is also promised through the prophets. The Hero’s of the OT lived the pattern but also spoke the promise of Jesus as Savior. 3. Present - Jesus is physically present in the Old Testament. 1. The “I Am” in whom Abraham rejoiced was Jesus (John 8:56-58) 2. The Lord who motivated Moses was Christ (Hebrews 11:26) 3. The Redeemer who brought them out of Egypt was Jesus (Jude 5) 4. The Rock in the wilderness was Christ (1 Corinthians 10: and the other 4) 5. The King of Isaiah’s temple vision was the Son (John 12:40-41)
    2. Examples
      1. Walk in the Garden (Genesis 3)
        1. Pattern - substitutionary pattern - The guilty are robed in righteousness - clothed in Christ
        2. Promise - Everything but the couple is cursed. The Seed of the Woman is promised in Genesis 3:15
        3. Present - Who is the creator Lord that walked with the favored creatures in the Garden? Genesis 3:8. Jonathan Edwards said it best when he wrote, “When we read in sacred history what God did, from time to time, towards his Church and people, and how he revealed himself to them, we are to understand it especially of the second person of the Trinity. When we read of God appearing after the fall, in some visible form, we are ordinarily, if not universally, to understand it of the second person of the Trinity. (History of the Work of Redemption, 20)
  5. Sacrificed Son (Genesis 22)
    1. Patterned - verse 2 All of Gods’ promises are focused on this beloved son. If he is sacrificed, God would have to - somehow! - bring him back to life in order to save and bless the world! Isaac was to be sacrifice on a mountain in the region that would become Jerusalem. He carries the wood on his back as he trudges up the hill toward the atoning sacrifice. All the while Abraham believed that he will receive his son back from death.
    2. Promise - verse 14 “Moses calls the mountain “The Lord will Provide”; as it is said t this day, ‘On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided” For hundreds, thousands of years, the Jewish nation pointed to that hill believing in a future provision, a future atonement.
    3. Present - verse 11an angel intervenes, verse 15 he speaks again. And though he is sent by the Lord, he speaks the Lord; “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord . . . I will surely bless . . . . I will surely multiply . . .” (16-17) The Angels name could be translated “the Sent One” who insists that he is from the Lord and that he is the Lord!
  6. Burning Bush (Exodus 3)
    1. Pattern - Plants are often likened to Gods’ People or to the King who represents them. The Israelites in Egypt are on fire in the furnace of affliction, and here is the pattern, Their King, the great “I Am” descends into the burnings to be with his people and to lead them out. The pattern of the exodus is the patter n of the gospel.
    2. Promise - The entire exodus is a promise of Christ. Get 12 “the seed of Abraham will bless and rule the nations, question, is the seed singular or plural, the answer is yes, first plural in Israel and then singular in Christ(Galatians 3:16) In Genesis 15:13-15 the Lord prophesies a suffering and rising pattern for the “seed of Abraham”. The seed will be enslaved and afflicted, yet through judgment the seed would come out io a greater glory.
    3. Present - The diving Name, ‘I Am” is preserved in the name “Yahweh”. This name is used 6,800 times in the Hebrew Bible. John Owen said that he is “the Angel of the covenant, the great Angel of the presence of God, in-home was the name and nature of God . . . this was no other but the Son of God.” Jude 5 “Jesus , , , saved a people out of the land of Egypt” Jesu Christ really is the God of Israel and the Hero of the Whole Bible

By the end of this sermon I want you to . . . Worship Jesus because He is the focus of Gods’ purpose on Earth God:

  1. Jesus is the focus of Gods’ plan of redemption

    1. Jesus is the Lamb Slain from before the foundation of the Earth Revelation 13:8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.
    2. The entire Bible is the story of God’s redemption through Jesus John 5:39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,
    3. Because of what Jesus did, He has the Name above every name, exalted position, and reigns over creation
      1. Philippians 2:9-11 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
      2. Hebrews 1:1-3 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
  2. Jesus redemption paid for everything God promises us

    1. Jesus gained all of Gods’ promises for us. 2 Corinthians 1:19-20 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. 20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
    2. Jesus made the way the throne room open for us. John 16:23 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
    3. Jesus will do greater works through us by the Holy Spirit who comes as a gift of God through Jesus. John 14:12 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
  3. Jesus will return to finish the war

  1. Victorious Return Revelation 19:1-9,11-16,17-21
    1. The Bride makes herself ready! t After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out“Hallelujah!Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, 2 for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” 3 Once more they cried out, “Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up forever and ever.” 4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” 5 And from the throne came a voice saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.” 6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And the angel said[a] to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” . . .
  2. Jesus open Heaven and comes to Earth in Power 11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in[b] blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule[c] them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
  3. The world makes war in futility 17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave,[d] both small and great.” 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence[e] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.
  4. Final Judgement Revelation 20:1-3, 7-10,11-15
    1. Satan is loosed for a little while Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit[a] and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.
    2. Satan will deceive the nations 7 And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven[b] and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
    3. But only for a Moment 11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
  5. The Blessings of the Saints
    1. Revelation 20:4-6 4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.
