Jonah 1:4-16

Running from God is impossible because His mercy is always waiting for us.

  1. Bring on the Rain (Jonah 1:4)
  1. A Storm that can break the boat
    1. Word “Hurled” - To storm, by implication to be horribly afraid because it came to take us away.. Hebrew word “Shabar” to make the ship burst, to destroy it by breaking it into pieces
  2. The Mariners are so afraid they call on their gods
  1. Asleep at the wheel (Jonah 1:5-10)

    1. The Sailors are terrified. Crying out to useless gods, throwing cargo overboard. Their life was more precious to them than the things.
    2. Jonah is asleep in the bottom.
      1. The word means “lower” but can mean figuratively “FALL” Jonah had fallen as far down into the ship as he could.
      2. This kind of sleep is described as a sleep of death. He was asleep while other men were in danger of perishing. This is what Jonah wanted . Ephesians 5:14
    3. God uses lost men to highlight Jonah’s need to repent
      1. They cast lots
      2. Falls on Jonah
    4. A serious Question (9)
      1. Question is in verse 8
        1. A Hebrew
        2. Fears Yahweh who made earth ad sea
      2. Right words, but wrong behavior
  2. Mercy in Power (Jonah 1:11-16)

  1. The Sailors attempt to fight God
    1. Sailors are suffering because of Jonah’s rebellion
    2. Our sin always has collateral damage
  2. Jonah asks them to throw him over. He would rather die than repent
  3. The Sailors honor God. They knew their gods could not help. They turn to Jonah’s God, Yahweh.
  4. Even in our rebellion God can extend His mercy beyond us to those around us.

Conclusion:

  1. How has disobedience affected your life or the lives to those around you?
  2. What lesser god are you tempted to serve?
  3. Allow God to turn your failures into a transformation for Him.
