Romans 13:1-7 It is about who controls us, who do we trust? All authority comes from God (Romans 13:1-2) Define authorities To resist rightful authority is to resist God divine order Application: When we honor authority, we are not merely obeying people, rather we acknowledge God’s sovereignty. Godly Authority is not a terror (if you do right!) (v 3-4) When Authority is used rightly, it is for our good - promotes justice, peace, and righteousness. Spiritually, this mirrors God’s own character. He is not a terror to those who do rightly, He is a refuge. When we live rightly, His authority gives us courage, not fear When we resist His authority, that same power becomes judgment out of holiness. Illustration: A parents rules are not to make children fear, but to keep them safe. Only rebellion feels like restriction. Application: Right living removes fear. As we walk in alignment with God’s authority, the more His power becomes our protection. We honor God by paying what we owe (v 5-7) Paul ties practical obedience: to paying taxes, respect, and honor Jesus taught this. (Matthew 22:21) Paying taxes is not about supporting the government, it is about honoring God’s design for order Giving to God is our first priority of our life. (Proverbs 3:9) When we acknowledge God as the true owner of ourselves and all authority, every other obligation takes its proper place Illustration: When we are in alignment with God’s order, every act becomes an act of worship. Application: Our integrity in earthly matters reflects our loyalty in Heavenly matters. The believers life is one continuous offering of obedience. Conclusion: Obedience to authority is ultimately obedience to God. So who is in charge of your life? You, or God?
