Romans 13:1-7

It is about who controls us, who do we trust?

  1. All authority comes from God (Romans 13:1-2)
  1. Define authorities
  2. To resist rightful authority is to resist God divine order
  3. Application: When we honor authority, we are not merely obeying people, rather we acknowledge God’s sovereignty.
  1. Godly Authority is not a terror (if you do right!) (v 3-4)
  1. When Authority is used rightly, it is for our good - promotes justice, peace, and righteousness.
  2. Spiritually, this mirrors God’s own character. He is not a terror to those who do rightly, He is a refuge.
  3. When we live rightly, His authority gives us courage, not fear
  4. When we resist His authority, that same power becomes judgment out of holiness.
  5. Illustration: A parents rules are not to make children fear, but to keep them safe. Only rebellion feels like restriction.
  6. Application: Right living removes fear. As we walk in alignment with God’s authority, the more His power becomes our protection.
  1. We honor God by paying what we owe (v 5-7)
  1. Paul ties practical obedience: to paying taxes, respect, and honor
  2. Jesus taught this. (Matthew 22:21)
  3. Paying taxes is not about supporting the government, it is about honoring God’s design for order
  4. Giving to God is our first priority of our life. (Proverbs 3:9)
  5. When we acknowledge God as the true owner of ourselves and all authority, every other obligation takes its proper place
  6. Illustration: When we are in alignment with God’s order, every act becomes an act of worship.
  7. Application: Our integrity in earthly matters reflects our loyalty in Heavenly matters. The believers life is one continuous offering of obedience.

Conclusion:

  1. Obedience to authority is ultimately obedience to God.
  2. So who is in charge of your life? You, or God?
