The King is anointed (Psalm 2:6-7) In the OT no one became a king by ambition or popularity. A king was chosen and empowered by God and anointed by a prophet. Saul 1 Samuel 10:1, David 1 Samuel 16:13, and Solomon 1 Kings 1:39. Typically oil was used and poured on their head as a sign God was setting them apart. At Jesus birth, God sent Angels to announce Jesus birth in Luke 2:11 we read, 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Christ means anointed one, Jesus is born a king (Matthew 2:2 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[a] and have come to worship him.” His announcement does not happen in a temple or castle, it happens in a manger. Not in Jerusalem, but in Bethlehem, not with oil but with the promise of heaven. Jesus is anointed by the prophet John the Baptist Uses water instead of Oil God the Father speaks, the Holy Spirit descends anointing Jesus for service Application: Here is the practical truth for us, If you belong to Christ, He has anointed you by the Holy Spirit. There is no king if there is not a kingdom (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Christmas reminds us that you were not saved just to sit in church, you were anointed to bring the elect into the kingdom of God by spreading the Gospel Question: If God trusted you with the message of His Son, are you sharing Him this season — or just celebrating Him in private? The King wins a victory (Psalm 2: 8-9) Saul defeated the Ammonites, David killed Goliath, Solomon defeated the ones who tried to claim the throne, Jesus goes into the wilderness to kill Satan Jesus shows His worth by defeating the foe and returns in the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:14) 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. The next three years shows multiple victories over sickness, demons, nature, and ultimately death. Application: Christmas forces us to ask a question, will we follow our King into battle, or will we just see him as a good teacher, a moral example, or a comforting tradition? But He is a King that defeats His foes and has called us to obedience to win the lost to His side! To bring his enemies into the Kingdom! We conquer through spreading the Good News, the Gospel Jesus battle began at birth, Herod was enraged, Satan began to try to kill him from the beginning. Yet Jesus did not conquer with a sword, He conquered through surrender. He defeated sin on the cross, Death at the resurrection, and defeated Satan forever. But the War wages on until He comes back. The King is coronated (Psalm 2:10-12) His crucifixion is a parody of a coronation Called the King 6 times Two thieves His retinue Jesus showed a truth unknown to the crowd, not by saving Himself, but by dying for them. There is no coronation and ascension without a death. (Philippians 2:9-11) 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Application: If Jesus is King, you must obey. He has been declared King by God and man and there is no power over Him. He died for us and he calls us to live for Him!
