HomeGroup Questions Fall Session 2020 Misrepresenting God | UNSUBSCRIBE Exodus 20:7| September 27, 2020

  1. Have you ever seen your name spelled differently than you do? Do you know what your name means?
  1. This week we looked at the third of the Ten Commandments. Read Exodus 20:7 and review the message outline. What would you like to talk about further with the group?
  1. When was the first time you heard about the 3rd commandment? What did you think it was prohibiting?
  1. In the message we learned that God's name conveys His presence, character, and His redeeming relationship with His people. Think of all the ways we find the phrase, “God's name” or Jesus' name” in the Bible. In those cases, how does the definition above add to your understanding?
  1. This commandment is expressed negatively, “You shall not …”. How could you express it positively? What privilege does it highlight?
  1. While this commandment impacts our speaking, it is so much broader than that? What are some ways that a believer could “carry God's name in an empty way” other than in speech?
  1. Looking at the second half of vs. 7, why do you suppose God attaches such a stern warning? What does that communicate?
  1. How would you explain the 3rd commandment to a new believer?
  1. As always, take some time to share prayer requests and pray.
