How Hope Keeps Us Ready

Hope on the Horizon: Remedy for Doomscrolling

By Doug Kyle, November 09, 2025

When you’re planning a big event, the first question is usually, “When is it?” It’s pretty hard to plan a wedding, a reunion, or even a barbecue without a date and time. Once that’s set, everyone can prepare.

So why for the most important event in history – the Return of Jesus – are we given no date?

THE PROBLEMS WITH KNOWING THE DATE

1 Thes 5:1-3

  • We can become spiritually

1 Thes 5:6

  • We can become morally

1 Thes 5:7

THE BENEFITS OF AN IMMINENT RETURN

1 Thes 5:4-5

  • We stay spiritually

1 Thes 5:6

  • We stay morally

1 Thes 5:8

Questions for Further Reflection & Discussion

  1. Think about the last big event you had to plan (wedding, reunion, birthday, or trip). At what point in your planning did you nail down the date?
  1. When’s the first time you heard about Jesus' Return? How did it make you feel?
  1. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-8 and review the sermon outline. What stands out for you?
  1. Doug mentioned several reasons why God doesn’t just give us a calendar of end-time events. What are some other reasons that come to mind?
  1. Verse 2 says the day will come like a thief in the night. What does that metaphor teach us about the nature of the Lord’s return?
  1. Why do you think Paul links faith and love with the breastplate (protecting the heart) rather than hope?
  1. How does hope act like a helmet, protecting your mind and perspective (v.8)?
  1. In practical terms, what does it look like to stay spiritually alert in your daily routines?
