Make Me Willing

Making Room for Renewal

By Doug Kyle, February 01, 2026

SOMETIMES THE MOST HONEST PRAYER WE CAN PRAY IS:

“God, make me (to be )”

Psalm 51:12

  • If we do, doesn’t get the last word

Psalm 51:14-15

  • Instead, forgiven people become

Psalm 51:13

  • And freed voices life up

Psalm 51:14-15

Questions for Further Reflection & Discussion

  1. What’s something small you’ve had to talk yourself into being willing to do recently? (Exercise, a conversation, cleaning out a drawer, etc.)
  1. Read Psalm 51:12-15 and review the sermon outline. What are you still thinking about and why?
  1. David prays, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation.” Why is this an important prayer? What kinds of things rob our joy?

  1. How does guilt or shame tend to affect a person’s voice (spiritually, relationally, physically)?
  1. David believes God can free his lips again. What’s the difference between forced words and freed words when it comes to worship? How about with sharing our faith? Prayer?
  1. Who has been a “messenger of grace” in your life? Is there someone whose story helped you find spiritual hope?
  1. What does it look like for praise to flow from freedom rather than obligation?
  1. As you look ahead, what’s one area where a simple prayer, “God, make me willing,” could open space for renewal in your life?
