Everyone knows we should be good. And, if we’re honest, most of us would have to admit we have room to grow.

But if all we get from church is simply “be a better person,” we’ve missed the point. Today’s passage shows us where true and sustainable goodness really comes from. And the key to how goodness truly begins to shape our lives.

REALIZE WHAT GOD’S GOODNESS HAS DONE FOR US

2 Peter 1:3-4

  • us to Himself

  • us great promises

  • us for life

LET GOODNESS GROW OUT OF THE FAITH GOD GAVE YOU

2 Peter 1:5

  • God’s goodness personally

1 Peter 2:3

  • God’s goodness publicly

1 Peter 2:9

Questions for Further Reflection & Discussion

  1. What's a recent free sample you received at a store? Did it convince you to buy the product?
  1. When you hear the word “goodness,” what comes to mind?
  1. Read 2 Peter 1:3-5, 1 Peter 2:3, and 1 Peter 2:9 (and in 1 Peter 2:9, realize that the word praises is literally goodness). Review the sermon outline. What stood out to you most from Sunday's message?
  1. Peter says that God has given us “everything we need for a godly life.” If that is true, why do you think so many believers still feel spiritually under-equipped or inadequate?
  1. Which of the three expressions of God's goodness in verses 3-4 means the most to you right now (God called us to Himself; God gave us great promises; God equipped us for life)? Why?
  1. Which promise of God has carried you through a difficult season of life? How did it make a difference?
  1. 2 Peter 1:5 points out that goodness grows out of faith. Why is that distinction important? What happens when we try to become good without first understanding what God has done for us?
  1. The message suggested that we reflect God's goodness by doing for others what God has done for us (building relationships, making commitments, and helping people navigate life). Which of those comes most naturally to you? Which is most challenging?
  1. Think about the people you'll interact with this week: family members, coworkers, neighbors, friends, servers, cashiers, strangers, etc. Who might God be inviting you to intentionally show His goodness to this week? What could that look like in a practical way?
