HISTORICAL CONTENT Written by the Apostle Paul who planted the church in Corinth on his second missionary journey. Paul wrote two other letters to the church in Corinth (we have no record of them). Corinth was a Roman colony located in Greece with a population of over 700,000. Corinth had a reputation of debauchery, prostitution and idol worship. BLUEPRINTS FOR AN IMMATURE CHRISTIAN 1. Immature Christians pursue drama over peace. 1 Corinthians 1:10-11; I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose. For some members of Chloe’s household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. Romans 12:18; Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. 2. Immature Christians pursue indulgence over discipline. I Corinthians 6:12; You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything. 3. Immature Christians value themselves over others. Jesus Others Yourself I Corinthians. 13:4-6; Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Philippians 2:3-4; Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. Corinthian Church struggles: Suing one another (I Corinthians 6) They were not concerned about the struggles of others (I Corinthians 7) Dishonoring the Lord’s table (I Corinthians 11) Using their spiritual gifts for themselves (I Corinthians 12,14) They were being greedy with their money (I Corinthians 16) 4. Immature Christians value appearances over authenticity. 2 Corinthians 2:4; I wrote that letter in great anguish, with a troubled heart and many tears. I didn’t want to grieve you, but I wanted to let you know how much love I have for you. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9; We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.
