Why Does the Bible Address God in Masculine Terms?

By Dr. Alex McFarland, September 01, 2024

We are living in an age of gender suppression. Even the church is not immune to the influences of a culture that believes reality— and even Scripture— is malleable, changeable to suit our preferences. Consider how various Bible translations handle I Corinthians 16:13

Note how the KJV, ESV, NASB, and HCSB render this verse: “Be alert, stand firm in the faith, act like a man, be strong.”

Here is how the NIV, NLT, RSV, NRSV handle it: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”

Farther still from the actual Greek text is The Message, a “paraphrase” of Scripture: “Keep your eyes open, hold tight to your convictions, give it all you’ve got, be resolute, and love without stopping.”

Ephesians 1:3 speaks of, “God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

In I Kings 2:2, David, on his deathbed, speaking to his son Solomon, said: “I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong, therefore, and show yourself a man.”

In the Book of Job 40:7, God tells Job, “Now gird up your loins like a man.”

Why is it important to accept the Bible’s masculine revelations of God?

  1. It is because this is .

  2. In approximately passages, God is described through .

  3. We should not overlook God’s revelation of Himself, as , , , , and .

  4. The male imagery through which God reveals Himself is not .

  5. In obscuring a correct understanding of ourselves, Satan attempts to .

CONCLUSION: What are we to do with this knowledge?

CONTEXT: Understand that we are in a battle of worldview, and gender confusion / suppression are part of this.

TRUTH: Current confusion over gender has spiritual and social roots; It is not that reality, human physiology, nor that God and His Word have changed.

SCRIPTURE: It is vital that Christians and churches faithfully uphold and proclaim what Almighty God has revealed (irrespective of the opinions and criticisms of the fallen world).

OBEDIENCE: As a disciple of the Lord Jesus, we are called to faithful obedience, not to popularity or cultural accommodation.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Each of us will give an account for what we did with the truth we knew. We are stewards not owners (I Cor. 6:19); We are bound to Christ, not autonomous (Rom. 7:25)
