Matthew 26:36-56

Proposition: The Garden of Gethsemane demonstrated Jesus’ surrender to the Father in the midst of His deep anguish over what was to come. Through Jesus’ example we are able to see what surrender to God looks like for our lives.

Key Words and Terms

perilypos: “deeply grieved,” Matthew 26:38. This Greek term captures the depth of emotional response expected in situations of loss, betrayal, or impending doom. It also carries the idea of being encompassed or surrounded with grief.

genetheto: “be done,” Matthew 26:42. This Greek word is literally translated as “let be done” and affirms the commitment to bring something into being. It is the same word used in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures) in Genesis 1:3, “Let there be light.”
