Turning the World Upside Down (Acts 17:1-15)

Acts 17:6 (ESV), “These men ... have turned the world upside down.”

  1. The Tactics of Noble Truth-Seekers
  1. Attending. “As was Paul’s custom, he went to the synagogue.” (17:2)
  2. Reasoning. “… he used the Scriptures to reason with the people.” (2)
  3. Seeking. “… for three Sabbaths.” (2), “...day after day.” (11)
  4. Persuading. “This Jesus I’m telling you about is the Messiah.” (3)
  5. Believing. “As a result, many Jews believed.” (12)
  1. The Tactics of Jealous Agitators
  1. Emotions. “… but some of the Jews were jealous.” (17:5)
  2. Mobs. “… gathered troublemakers to form a mob and start a riot.” (5)
  3. Violence. “...they dragged out Jason and other believers.” (6)
  4. False Charges. “… disturbing our city (6), guilty of treason (7)
  5. Force. “...officials forced Jason and other believers to post bond (9)

Turning the World Upside Down

2 Thess. 1:3-6 (NLT), “Dear brothers and sisters, we can’t help but thank God for you, because your faith is flourishing and your love for one another is growing. 4 We proudly tell God’s other churches about your endurance and faithfulness in all the persecutions and hardships you are suffering. 5 And God will use this persecution to show his justice and to make you worthy of his Kingdom, for which you are suffering. 6 In his justice he will pay back those who persecute you.”
