The Attributes of God pt. 2 What we think of God is the defining factor of our life and reality. • The more our society drifts away from the true God, the more our society redefines reality to suit themselves and their own feelings. How can we know God truly? Through His Word (Special Revelation) Deuteronomy 29:29, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, so that we may follow all the words of this Law.” • Many things of God remain secret, they are none of our business, but the Bible is the special revelation of what God wants us to know about Him, to follow Him. Through His World (General Revelation) Rom. 1:20, “… since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” • There is no excuse for not knowing our Creator. Arthur Eddington was a famous British astrophysicist. He said, “The beginning seems to present insuperable difficulties unless we agree to look on it as frankly supernatural.” • The scientists will eventually arrive where theologians have been sitting for centuries. • Nature points to the Supernatural. Let’s look at four more attributes of God today… 1. GOD is infinite. Def. – “Not finite, limitless, without boundary.” God is infinite in all His attributes. No limit can be applied to God’s being. We will never exhaust or fully comprehend God. GOD is infinite. I Kings 8:27, “...will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!” Job 11:7, “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?” Psalm 147:5, “Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.” 2. GOD is omnipotent. Def. - “Limitless in power, all-powerfulness.” God can do anything that accords with his character and will. God has the power to do anything possible. God’s power assures us that God will and can keep His Word and promises. GOD is omnipotent. Jeremiah 32:17, “You ... have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You.” Luke 1:37, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” Job 26:14, “Who then can understand the thunder of his power?” Rev. 19:6, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.” 3. God is omniscient. Def. “Limitless in knowing, all-knowing.” God’s knowledge is unlimited, comprehensive, and perfect in every way. God knows all states of affairs, both actual and possible. God cannot be wrong about anything, including the future. God is omniscient. Ps. 139:1, “Lord, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I get up; You understand my thought from far away. 3 You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, Lord, You know it all.” Ps. 147:4, “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.” Rom. 11:33, “Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” 4. God is omnipresent. Def. “Limitlessly present, everywhere present.” There is nowhere that God is absent. God is present everywhere at once. God is with creation, but not part of creation. God is omnipresent. Psalm 139:7, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence… 9 If I take up the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will take hold of me.” Proverbs 15:3, “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good.” Jer. 23:24, “Can a person hide himself in hiding places so that I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” CONCLUSION “This is where most of us go astray. Our thoughts of God are not great enough; we fail to reckon with the reality of his limitless wisdom and power. Because we are ourselves are limited and weak, we imagine that at some points God is too, and we find it hard to believe that he is not.” - J. I. Packer, Knowing God How should we respond to an infinite God? I think John the Baptist had it right when He met Jesus (God in flesh). “He must increase, but I must decrease.” - John 3:30.
