Questioning Marriage

Matthew 19:1-12

Question #1: Can marriage end when a man decides his wife is no longer being married to?

Exodus 21:10-11

Deuteronomy 24:1-4a

Jesus’ Answer: Marriage was designed by God as a union between a man and a woman that display his and covenantal love.

Genesis 1:27-28

Genesis 2:24

Question #2: How can marriage be that permanent if scripture commands divorce?

Jesus’ Answer: Divorce was never God’s ; it is a sad reality of the destructive of a sin-hardened heart.

Jesus’ clear position on divorce: Divorce is allowed in the case of sexual immorality.

Question #3: If marriage is truly this , wouldn’t it be better to stay ?

Jesus’ Answer: As difficult as this is to accept, being married is not than being single.

Eunuch: A man who has been castrated for the purpose of serving/guarding the wives of a king.

Key Thoughts:

  1. The heart of Jesus is to protect the most vulnerable in marriage and culture…women.
  1. Marriage is a permanent union between a man and a woman that is not redefined by selfish desires nor cultural ideas that separate it from gender.
  1. Divorce destroys the image of God and his covenantal love yet is allowed in the case of immorality and abandonment (Ex 21, 1 Cor 7).
  1. Marriage is not elevated above Singleness…both are celebrated by Jesus.
