1 Corinthians 2:6–16

  1. Godly wisdom among the :

1 Corinthians 2:6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

Three attributes of the mature in 1 Corinthians:

– because they believe in Christ, the mature show a readiness to humbly receive God’s wisdom in the instruction of the apostles.

Sensitivity to God’s – the mature patiently allow the Holy Spirit to guide them into the mystery of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The mature express God’s in their relationships with – the mature are those who continually make progress in expressing the facets of God’s love in their relationships with others. Especially those shown in 1 Cor. 13

Application: Are these attributes of the mature part of your life?

  1. A mysterious wisdom from those of “this age:”

1 Corinthians 2:6-9 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.

1 Corinthians 2:8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1 Corinthians 2:9 However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him—

Application: How do I we live with the hope of glory in the forefront of or minds in this age?

How will living with the hope of the next age affect the way we live in this age?

  1. The Spirit’s role in truth:

1 Corinthians 2:10-13 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 13 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

1 Corinthians 2:14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

Application:

Do you sense the presence of the Holy Spirit within you teaching you and explaining the Word?

Philippians 2:12–13 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Do you believe that the Holy Spirit is helping you believe the message of Jesus?

Titus 3:4–6 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
