The Big Idea: God’s work in us through the gospel is so transformative that as we await Jesus’ return, we unselfconsciously our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  1. The Son of Man as King and Judge:

Matthew 25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him…

Daniel 7:13–14 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

2 Samuel 7:16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”

  1. A of the righteous and the cursed.

Matthew 25:32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Does this passage teach salvation by works?

“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, for the forgiveness of sins,” - Matthew 26:28

The Sheep:

Matthew 25:34-36 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Matthew 25:40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

The Goats:

Matthew 25:42-43 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

Who are the brothers and sisters mentioned in verse 40?

Matthew 12:46–49 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Matthew 10:40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me…

Matthew 10:42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

Acts 9:4–5 (Saul) fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.

• The brothers and sisters that Jesus is talking about in this passage are Jesus’s .

• The righteous in this passage, the ones who receive eternal life, are those who unselfconsciously Jesus’s disciples.

John 13:34–35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

1 John 4:20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

Matthew 24:9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

When a person receives Jesus, the Spirit of God brings about .

Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
