Love One Another John 15:9-17 John 17:3 “This is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” The progression of John 15:Abide in Christ → Love one another → Bear witness to the world. The Source of Love: Love from , from the Father (v. 9) John 15:9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. Isaiah 53:5-6 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. John 12:23 “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” The Father sends the Son to the cross not only to save , but to reveal . Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Expression of Love: (v. 10) John 15:10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love The Result of Love: (v. 11) John 15:11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. The Command of Love: Love One (vv. 12–13) John 15:12-14 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. What does it look like for me to lay down my life for others in obedience to Christ? The Relationship Changed by Love: From Servants to (vv. 14–17) John 15:15-17 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other. Three Application Questions How can I abide in Christ’s love this week? If I’m not dwelling in His love, then my obedience becomes either pride or exhaustion. So the real question is not just “Am I doing the right things?” but: Am I living from the reality that I am deeply loved by Christ right now? What would it look like to love my brothers and sisters as Christ has loved me this week? Not in theory—but specifically. Jesus didn’t define love vaguely; He defined it sacrificially. So this question forces it out of abstraction: Who is God putting in front of me, and what would it cost me to love them like Christ has loved me? What lasting fruit does God want me to bear through His power? We are chosen and appointed to bear fruit, not to be bystanders. That pushes us to evaluate direction, not just activity: Am I investing my time, energy, and prayers into things that reflect eternal life and impact others for Christ?
