Signs of the Spirit - Week 3

The Miracle of Pentecost

Focus: Jesus announced the ultimate good news that God’s Kingdom was coming near to dwell with humanity; and this good news once heard would change everything, for all time, for all people. In Jesus would come a new covenant of life, favour, and freedom founded on His resurrection; empowered not by human strength but by His Spirit. For “...I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you…” (Ezekiel 36:26).

1. Sharing Our Journey

Praise, Thanks, and Reflection

  • What little or big thing can you thank God for?
  • In what way have you been aware of God’s activity?
  • How have you gone living as a disciple of Jesus?
  • Where and with whom have you witnessed to the love and good news of Jesus?

Care and Prayer

In prayer, capture the things you have shared above, plus any personal needs for prayer or support.

2. Opening God’s Word

Setting the Scene

Pentecost is considered the birth of the church. It is the time when the Holy Spirit touched and empowered the followers of Jesus to continue His Kingdom work. It stands alongside Christmas and Easter as an incomparable act of God. It is miraculous in itself and serves as a reminder that God is present in person and has the power to equip, strengthen, and encourage disciples in their witness and service.

Read: Acts 2:1-21

  • What countries have you visited where you wished you knew the language? Why?
  • Read Exodus 23:16 (The Feast of Harvest), and Deuteronomy 16:9-12 (The Feast of Weeks—a week of weeks after Passover, hence named Pentecost, i.e., 50). Why is it appropriate or convenient that the Holy Spirit was given at Pentecost?
  • In what way do you interpret the experience of the wind and fire in verses 2-3?
  • What seems to be the purpose of the Holy Spirit’s gift of tongues? See verses 7-8. How does the message of the disciples help to achieve it?
  • How does being filled with the Holy Spirit relate to bearing witness to Jesus?
  • Imagine yourself being present that day. What do you see, hear, and feel? Would you respond more like those in verse 12 or those in verse 13? Why?
  • Reflect on Peter seizing the opportunity in verse 14ff. Why do you think he did? What does it tell you about Peter? What has brought about the change in him from that described in Luke 24:54-62?
  • What is your experience of being empowered by God to be a witness to Jesus Christ?
  • What questions do you still want answered?

3. Living out the Heart of God

  • What have you learned from this study about following Jesus and growing as His disciple?
  • What will you do this week to be better prepared for God to work in and through you?

Prayer for each other

  • You may find it helpful to break into 2s or 3s to pray.
  • Pray for your 5 (from your Relational Map – See ‘The Heart of God’ Study – Week 1).
  • Pray for the enduement of the Holy Spirit, a fresh infilling for encouragement and effectiveness as a disciple of Jesus. See Ephesians 3:14-19 and 5:15-20.
