Signs of the Spirit - Week 4 Fruit of the Spirit Focus: Jesus announced the ultimate good news that God’s Kingdom was coming near to dwell with humanity; and this good news once heard would change everything, for all time, for all people. In Jesus would come a new covenant of life, favour, and freedom founded on His resurrection; empowered not by human strength but by His Spirit. For “...I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you…” (Ezekiel 36:26). Study by: Anita Venning Sermons can be viewed on the Hope Valley Church YouTube Channel 1. Sharing Our Journey Praise, Thanks, and Reflection Invite people to share from one or more of the questions below. It can be done as a whole group or in subgroups. It can also involve a worship song. What are you thankful for? Where have you seen God at work? How has God used you? How have you gone living out God’s Word since our last gathering? Where have you struggled to follow the way of Jesus? Where and with whom have you witnessed to the love and good news of Jesus? Care and Prayer In prayer, capture the things you have shared above after also inviting people to share any personal needs for prayer or support. 2. Opening God’s Word Setting the Scene Paul wrote both Galatians and 1 and 2 Corinthians to address issues in the church. The Corinthians were being influenced by their culture, seeking status through expressions of gifts. The Galatians were adding to the gospel by trying to keep the law as a means of being right with God. Paul writes of being led by the Spirit, not trying harder, and following the way of love. Read: Galatians 5:13-26, 1 Corinthians 13:1-14:4 Read in different translations to hear the readings in a fresh way. What do the two passages have in common? And how do they differ? How is the definition of love expanded? Can you share a time when you experienced God's love expressed through the fruit of the Spirit, e.g., someone showing you patience or faithfulness? Take some time to quietly, individually reread 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, putting your own name in place of “love” and “it” (e.g., “Ann is patient, Ann is kind”). Share with one another an area where, with the Holy Spirit's help, you have changed and grown, and where you want to grow more. The Galatians passage in verse 25 says, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” How do we do that, and what difference does it make? Love is both a command and a fruit of the Spirit. Fruit is produced as we abide in the vine, staying connected to Jesus (John 15:5). What does that look like in your life? 3. Living out the Heart of God What has stood out to you the most from this study? How can you live it out in your life this week? Can you memorize the fruit of the Spirit and use them for reflection and prayer? Prayer for each other Break into 2s or 3s to pray. Pray for your 5 (from your Relational Map – See ‘The Heart of God’ Study – Week 1). Pray for each other to grow in being more in tune with the Holy Spirit's prompts and whispers.
