Way of the Wise

Week 1

This series explores the book of Proverbs, focusing on how God's wisdom shapes our everyday lives. Through these studies, we aim to grow in understanding, humility, and reverence for God, learning what it means to live wisely in a complex world.

Looking Back

Centering Activity: Take a moment of silence together. Slowly read this phrase aloud as a group twice: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Sit quietly for one minute, inviting God to calm your mind and open your heart.

Reflection Questions

  1. Over the past fortnight, where have you seen God at work in your life or circumstances?
  2. When have you sought (or neglected) God's wisdom in your decisions recently?

Looking Up

Read Proverbs 1:1-7 together as a group.

Discussion Questions

  1. What stands out to you in these opening verses about the purpose of Proverbs?
  2. How does the passage describe wisdom, and who is it for?
  3. Verse 7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” What do you think "fear of the Lord" means in this context?
  4. Why do you think fools despise wisdom and instruction? What might that look like in today's world?

Optional Resource: Consider watching a short Bible overview video on Proverbs (such as one from BibleProject) to help frame the purpose and themes of the book.

Looking Ahead

Application Questions

  1. What is one area of your life right now where you need God's wisdom?
  2. What practical step can you take this week to grow in “the fear of the Lord”?
  3. Who could you invite to speak wisdom into your life, and how will you remain open to instruction?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for being the source of all wisdom. Teach us what it means to truly fear You — to live in awe, humility, and trust. Help us to seek Your guidance in every part of our lives and to be people who listen, learn, and grow. Guard our hearts from pride and foolishness, and shape us into people who walk in Your ways. Amen.
