GETTING TO THE POINT

The First Sermon of the Church

ACTS: Church 101

THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 2:6 (NIV) When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs - we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!

First, note that it was a “known” language.

Second, it arrested the attention of those who heard.

Third, the content was worship.

Acts 2:12 (NIV) “And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another ‘What does this mean?’”

Acts 2:13 (NIV) But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.”

A SUMMARY OF PETER’S SERMON

  1. It was . First, the apostle answered their question; second, he told them about Christ; third, he enlisted commitment.

  2. The sermon was SCRIPTURAL. Peter’s message abounds with God’s Word.

  1. The sermon was - .

  2. The sermon was attention-getting and .

  3. The sermon was . It began by answering the question “What does this mean?” (Acts 2:12) and ended by answering the question “What shall we do?” (Acts 2:37).

  4. The sermon was CONVICTING. “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’”(Acts 2:37).

PETER’S SERMON: What Do You Do with Jesus

Acts 2:14 (NIV) Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!

PART 1: Why Should They Listen 2:14-21

Acts 2:16 (NIV) No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

What Luke has described in 2:1-13, Peter now explains.

  1. What Peter, the 120 and onlookers were experiencing was the pouring out of God’s Spirit as prophesied by Joel.

  2. These are the “last days” of God’s redemptive program.

  3. All of God’s people get to participate.

PART 2: The Identify of the Messiah 2:22-36

Acts 2:22 "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles [“powers” – their nature being a demonstration of the power of God] and wonders [their effect being to arouse astonishment] and signs [their purpose being to embody or signify spiritual truth] which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know - 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24 But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.

  1. The Testimony of 2:22-24

First, Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan.

Second, the listeners were culpable. They were not innocent.

Third, God’s final act of attestation was the resurrection.

Acts 2:25 "For David says of Him, 'I saw the Lord always in my presence; for He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; moreover my flesh also will live in hope; 27 because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.'

  1. The Testimony of 2:25-28

Luke 24:17 (NIV) He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 “What things?” he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn't find His body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but Him they did not see.” 25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?" 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.

Acts 2:29 Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 And so, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ [the One who], that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay. 32 This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: 'The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 35 until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” '

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ - this Jesus whom you crucified."

PART 3: The Conclusion is Jesus is the 2:36

THE INVITATION 2:37
