I AM The Light

By Pastor Dan Williams, September 13, 2020

John 8:12 (NLT) Jesus, the Light of the World 12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Big Idea: Jesus thinks He is the only way for humans to see God in the darkness of sin.

Jesus is the light of the world who allows us…

  1. ... to our God .

John 1:4–9 (NLT) 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it… 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. John 1:17–18 (NLT) 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. Colossians 1:15 (NLT) 15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. Hebrews 1:2–3 (NLT) 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. ... 3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, …

  1. ...to see our & .

John 1:9–12 (NLT) 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

Ephesians 5:6–9 (NLT) 6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. 7 Don’t participate in the things these people do. 8 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

Those who don’t yet know Jesus, the light:

  • will be overtaken
  • will walk in blinding darkness
  • will not see God
  • stumble into landmines of sin & destruction.

John 12:35–36 (NLT) 35 Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going.

How do I know if I “have the light”?

  • God made this light shine in our .

2 Corinthians 4:6 (NLT) 6 For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

  • I see, believe, accept, trust and follow Jesus as God’s light.

John 1:12 (NLT) 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 12:36 (NLT) 36 Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.”

  • You don’t have to wander through life finding and a god for yourself and on your own.

  • You don’t have to on your efforts to save yourself.
