BE TRUTHFUL.

By Pastor Dan Williams, February 28, 2021

Main Idea: In a world full of lies, God has designed you to take your place among the community of believers as a truth-bearer.

God is .

John 8:31–32 (NLT) 31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Who Should I Be? Be .

That you know the truth (John 8:32) That you walk in the truth (3 John 1:4) That you speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15) That you be sanctified in truth (John 17:17) That you rejoice in the truth (1 Cor. 13:6) That you rightly handle the truth (2 Tim. 2:15) That you obey the truth (1 Pet. 1:22)

How can I be more truthful? Identify the truths.

  • Moral relativism (+individualism) = idea that “what’s right for you may not be right for me”.
    • Moral relativism asserts that personal truth is the highest form of truth we can possess, that no higher, absolute truth exists.
  • Individualism = notion of a personal “individual” truth that exists independent of shared objective truth.
    • A problem w/ ”living my truth”?

“...above all else,...heart is deceitful...desperately wicked” (Jer. 17:9).

Trust shared Truths above “ truth”.

“But it is not new truths we need; we need old truths recently forgotten. It is not personal truths we need, but rather shared truth preserved and passed down from one believing generation to the next, personalized to us in our current day.” ~ Jen Wilkin

How should we live as His image bearers? True disciples in the truth of Jesus’s teachings.

John 8:31–32 (NLT) 31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

  • Helps you avoid the .

  • Helps you spot the .

Continuing The Conversation:

  1. Why do you think twisted truths of moral relativism and individualism are so attractive to people? (See message notes for definitions)

  2. Instead of “living our own truth” or looking for a “fresh word”, what do you think of this idea?

“But it is not new truths we need; we need old truths recently forgotten. It is not personal truths we need, but rather shared truth preserved and passed down from one believing generation to the next, personalized to us in our current day.” ~ Jen Wilkin

  3. How has (or could) abiding in Jesus's teaching that he is the “the way, the truth and the life” help(ed) you…

    1. avoid pitfalls OR
    2. spot the fakes ?
