Take Heart & Trust Him Alone (2/8)

Learning to Express Deeper Affection For God

By Pastor Dan Williams, October 10, 2021

MAIN IDEA || While you’re in trouble, you can entrust yourself to God’s unfailing love & faithfulness as Jesus did.

I’m in big , Lord!

Psalm 31:1, 9-13 (NLT)

I take in you, Lord!

Psalm 31:3-4 (NLT) 3 You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. 4 Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone.
Psalm 71:3 (NLT) 3 Be my rock of safety where I can always hide. Give the order to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.

I rest my trust in you , Lord!

Psalm 31:5,6,14-15,23-24 (NLT) 6 I hate those who worship worthless idols. I trust in the Lord. 14 But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” Psalm 40:4 (NLT) 40:4 Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.

5 I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God. 15 My future is in your hands.

Luke 23:46 (NLT) 46 Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.

23 Love the Lord, all you godly ones! For the Lord protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly punishes the arrogant.
24 So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord!

I finally what you want, Lord!

Psalm 40:6 (NLT) 6 You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand— you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.

1. You desire my obedience.

Psalm 40:7-8 (NLT) 7 Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: 8 I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”

Hebrews 10:5–7 (NLT) 5 That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer. 6 You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin. 7 Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God— as is written about me in the Scriptures.’

2. You want to hear about your unfailing love & faithfulness.

Psalm 40:9-10,16 (NLT) 9 I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O Lord, well know. 10 I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.

16 But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!”

CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION:

1. If you’ve ever felt like you were in big trouble, where did (do) you instinctively turn for help?

2. Why do you think God cares so much about replacing our heartless sacrifices with our joyful obedience?

3. It’s recorded by eyewitnesses that while being crucified and just as he was dying, Jesus raised his voice and shouted this prayer from Psalm 31:5 ,

“...Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” (Luke 23:46 NLT).

  • Based on the timing, words and source of his prayer, what are some things we might learn from Jesus about prayer?
