Dealing differently w/antagonists & enemies

Matthew 5:38–48 (NLT)

Jesus: in my kingdom there’s a contrasting way of dealing with your & .

Matthew 5:38–48 (NLT) 38 “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’

How do Jesus’ disciples deal w/evil people?

How to deal with your antagonists.

39 But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. 40 If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. 41 If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.

  • Surprise malicious people.

42 Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow.

  • Don’t turn away needy people.

How to deal with your enemies.

43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.

  • Love your enemies enough to pray for them.

46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that.

Jesus: I’m expecting you to accept these standards for yourself.

48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

What Now?

1. Tell yourself the truth about the way you’re dealing with your antagonists & enemies.

2. Ask yourself: “Am I reacting to my antagonists & enemies any different than godless people?”

3. Behold more Jesus to be more like Jesus.

CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION

1. What have you noticed about the way Chrsitians typically treat their enemies & react to persecution?

2. True children of God live “in contrast” by dealing with antagonists & enemies differently:

a. Jesus: “…love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.”

b. What’s your gut reaction to hearing this is his expectation for true disciples?

3. The power we need to live in contrast (salty & bright) to the world comes from trusting & treasuring Jesus. In order to be more like Jesus, how might you focus on being with him more?
