Sabbath (1/4)

Practicing The Way of Jesus

By Pastor Dan Williams, January 04, 2026

BIG IDEA

God did not design Sabbath as a burdensome rule to manage, but as a gift that restores our souls by drawing us back into life with Him.

SABBATH: A 24-hour time to stop, rest, delight, and worship.

  • – Ceasing from ordinary work & production

  • – Allowing body and soul to recover

  • – Enjoying God’s good gifts without guilt

  • – Re-centering life around God Himself

MARK 2:27 (NLT) “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”

Jesus reframes Sabbath as a to receive, not a rule to follow.

9 CORE CONVICTIONS ABOUT SABBATH

  1. Sabbath Is About Formation, Not Information
  2. Sabbath Is Resistance to the Culture of Hurry
  3. Sabbath Pushes Back Against Pharaoh’s System
  4. Sabbath Exposes Our Need for Control
  5. Sabbath Is an Act of Faith
  6. Sabbath Is Meant to Be Enjoyed
  7. Sabbath Honors Our God-Given Limits
  8. Sabbath Is About Being, Not Doing
  9. Sabbath Requires Intention

Jesus does not abolish Sabbath — He it.

Matthew 11:28 (NLT) Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

What Now?

  1. STOP — What do I need to cease for 24 hours?
  2. REST — What actually restores me?
  3. DELIGHT — What reminds me that God is good?
  4. WORSHIP — How do I intentionally turn my heart toward God?

Continuing the Conversation

  1. Where do you feel the strongest internal resistance to Sabbath, and what might that resistance be revealing about your heart?
  2. When you imagine a 24-hour Sabbath that truly gives life, what activities help you stop, rest, delight, and worship—and which ones quietly drain you?
  3. How might practicing Sabbath reshape the way you understand God’s love and your value as a person?
