Facing Uncertainty and Doubt

By Rick Bayer, January 10, 2021
  • Matthew 28:17

17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.

A few things which I struggle with:

  1. Why are there so many hypocritical Christian leaders?
  2. Why does life appear so random?

Yet you, LORD are our Father. We are the clay; you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8

  1. Why are miracles so infrequent?
  2. Why is God so often so silent?

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart Jeremiah 29:13

Doubt and Faith are not mutually exclusive (Matthew 28:17)

The Christian faith is bi-polar. Disciples live their life between worship and doubt, trusting and questioning, hoping and worrying. Dale Brunner

Doubt are the ants in pants of faith, they keep it awake and moving. Frederich Buechner

Be merciful to those who doubt Jude 1:22

Questions for D groups and/or personal study:

  • Do you struggle with any of the same questions that Rick has? If so, which ones? If not, are there other issues that raise doubts in your mind?

  • How do you resolve these or do you?

  • Read Matthew 29:19 and Jude 1:22. What reassurance do you receive from these verses?

  • Do you agree with Rick that faith and doubt are not mutually exclusive? Why or why not?

  • How can your group help you to move towards the grassy shore of belief?
