Matthew 5:38-41 (NRSV)

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.

You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer.

But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;

and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well;

and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.

Questions for Discipleship Groups or Personal Study:

  1. How important do you think it is to be well informed of Jesus' Jewishness in knowing, following and understanding Him in your own life?

  2. Are you more comfortable learning/discerning from stories, or do you prefer direct teaching of facts, etc?

  3. How do you feel when you hear a new interpretation of a biblical text that is very different from what you’ve heard/believed for a long time.

  4. If you think “turning the other cheek,” “if someone asks for your outer garment, give him your under garment,” and “if someone asks you to walk one mile, walk two,” might be viable ways to understand those midrashim of Jesus, how might you see some of His other encounters in the New Testament differently?

  5. How hard is it for you to disagree with someone over things of faith and following Jesus and still remain calm and respectful and curious about the other person enough to stay in the conversation/relationship?

  6. Do you think Jesus stressed the Kingdom “already here” to the same extent that He stressed the Kingdom as our eternal existence after our earthly sojourn is finished?
