Wise and Foolish Builders

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. Luke 6:48 NIV

So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic. Isaiah 28:16 NIV

  • Do you have a favourite building project that you have completed? Is there something you dream about building one day?

  • What similarities and differences do you see between the two builders?
  • Jesus in overthrowing works righteousness (i.e. Qumran expectations) and religious ritual righteousness (i.e. temple) places himself as the foundation stone. What does it mean for you to follow a “who” and not base your life upon a “what”?

  • The wise man put the words of Jesus into practice (v. 24). What is Jesus asking you to do now? How can your group help?
