The Spirit Changes Everything Main Idea: The Holy Spirit changes fearful, self-directed people into Jesus-shaped witnesses. I. The Spirit Is With Us And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17 The disciples move from fear in the Upper Room to boldness in Acts 4. Peter’s transformation is explained by one thing: the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but a person. The Spirit: Knows Grieves Chooses Speaks Relates Key Truth: We don’t the Spirit. We with the Spirit. Important Reminder: The Spirit is not a mechanism to manipulate. We do not control Him. We surrender to Him. Encouragement: You never have to convince the Holy Spirit to be good to you. He is more committed to your salvation than you are. II. The Holy Spirit Works Us The Spirit Us of Sin We naturally excuse and justify ourselves. Self-forgiveness cannot remove guilt before God. The Spirit opens our eyes to our need for Jesus. The Spirit Gives John 3 We are not merely improved; we are born again. Sin shapes our loves and desires. The Spirit changes what we love. Galatians 5:22–23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 The Spirit produces: Love Joy Peace Patience Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self-control Key Truth: Obedience stops feeling like slavery and starts looking like life with God. III. The Spirit Forms a New 1 Corinthians 12 The Spirit baptizes believers into one body. The Spirit gives gifts to ordinary people for ministry and mission. Every believer has a place in the body of Christ. Key Truth: In Christ, you are not disposable. You belong to the body. Application: Life together requires: Compassion Kindness Humility Patience Forgiveness Love IV. The Spirit Makes the Impossible Romans 8 To be led by the Spirit means surrender. It means: Inviting Him to search your motives Correcting your assumptions Directing your steps Praying, “Not my will, but yours be done.” Witness Witness is not only for pastors or missionaries. The Spirit empowers ordinary believers in ordinary places. Key Truth: God has not set you up to fail. The Spirit: Was at work before you arrived Will still be at work after you leave Invites you to join Him in what He is already doing Final Challenge: What if each of us simply joined the Spirit in the life of one person?
