Where Does The Power of The Gospel as Well as Sin Come From?

By Pr Zeny Vidacak, July 24, 2050

1 Paul, a servant[a] of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David[b] according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Longing to Go to Rome

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[c] that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians,[d] both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,[e] as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”[f]

God's Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Here are the three questions we will be asking and looking for the answer based on the text given above?

  1. What is in the gospel that I shoud give myself into 'slavery'to it?
  2. Where does the beauty and thransforming power of the gospel come from?
  3. Where does the corrupting power of sin come from?

1. What is in the gospel that I should give myself into ‘slavery’ to it?

“This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel. It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes.”

This was Martin Luther's conviction relating to the importance of the book of Romans

“Paul, a SLAVE of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the Gospel of God?” (1:1)

What's in the, sport, money, career, relationships that we want to give ourselves into service or it? There is; beauty, meaning, power and love worth These values transcend a dull drum of insignificance. But what is in the gospel which is worth living for? Or Where does the power of the gospel lie in?

“The gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding His Son, who as to His human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness wasdeclared with power to be the Son of Godby His resurrection from the dead. Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1:2-4)

According to the text it lies in Jesus who was:

What is in human, divine, crucified, ressurrected Jesus that possesses a drawing power which makes me want to be ‘slave’ to Him?

2. Where does the transforming power of the gospel come from?

It's in Jesus, the only perfect human exchanges his glory, beauty and righteousness for my corruption and sin. This reality is something we find in the exeprience called Martin Luther said:

“When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent’, He willed entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”

Apostle Paul calls it ‘power’.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…”

3. Where does the corrupting power of sin come from?

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles."

So, the corrupting power of sin is in
People in general do this routinely and regularly. We in our natural self exchange the glory of God for the glory of. We typically worship things or people rather than God.

“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened”

What are the consequences of this ?

"Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things, rather than the Creator – who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this God gave them to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed Indecent acts with other men, and received because of this in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did notthink it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, He gave them over to a depraved mind to dowhat ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless… (Rom. 1:24-31)

So what are the consequences of the exchange from worshiping God to worshiping other things or people? There are two consequences or two exchanges which take place?

  1. The one is relating to sexual relations. Natural sexual relations (heterosexual) between man and woman are into (homosexual) between man and man or woman and woman.

  2. Another one is relating to exchange of character: Goodness in exchange for Generosity in exchange for Contentment in exchanger for Respect for life in exchange for Peace in exchange for Honesty in exchange for Kindness in exchange for Respect in exchanger for Compliment in exchanger for Loving God in exchanger for Modest in exchange for Meek in exchanger for Humble in exchanger for Obeying parents in exchanger for Sensible in exchanger for Faithful in exchange for Compassionate in exchange for Gentle in exchange for

So, whose slave are you?
