Faith: Hope-Activated Belief

Ability, resources, insight, and opportunity are powerful assets—but without conviction, passion, and consistent action, they remain unused and unproductive. A talented artist who never picks up a brush, a well-connected entrepreneur who never pursues an idea, or a brilliant student who never studies—each illustrates how potential without purpose leads nowhere.

Possessing a gift—whether physical strength, intellectual ability, or social influence—is not enough. Without awareness of that gift and the drive to cultivate it, its impact will never be realized. What matters more than the gift itself is the belief in it. That belief sparks discipline, fuels persistence, and carries a person through setbacks.

Even when it seems no advantage exists, belief can uncover possibilities. Think of someone with limited education who builds a thriving business through relentless effort and belief. Or an underdog athlete who trains harder than anyone else and earns a spot no one thought possible. Belief transforms potential into power. Without it, even the most significant advantages fade into silence.

In Christ, we’ve been given the gift of grace—a divine empowerment that fuels our abilities, resources, insight, and opportunities, even in the bleakest situations. Everything we could ever need in life has already been made available through Him. What remains is our faith - the choice to believe, respond, and receive what He has freely offered. This gift is complete and all-encompassing. Embraced by faith, it transforms impossibilities into living realities.

When our hope—a confident, expectant longing for what God has promised—moves us to act in faith, it pleases the Father. In that moment, what was once simply available through Jesus’ sacrifice becomes personally received, experienced, and fruitful.

Notes

Our Salvation – the free gift of grace, activated by faith

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NKJV) 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Not just for salvation – progressive application in all of life

Romans 1:16-17 (NKJV) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

What is Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (NLT) Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see. (AMPC) NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation,  the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

Faith – what is done and said now to demonstrate belief.

Without the substance of action now, faith is lifeless.

James 2:26 (NKJV) 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

The Gift – Everything

Drawing near by faith receives all He’s given.

2 Peter 1:3 (NLT) 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.

Complete – in everything.

Colossians 2:9-10 (NKJV) 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

Examples:

1. Healing

  • Hope: “I believe Christ bore all my sickness and healing is mine.”
  • Faith: Praying boldly, confessing healing scriptures, thanking God for healing before symptoms change.
  • Scripture: “By whose stripes you were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
  • Example: A woman believes God can heal her chronic pain. Instead of only wishing, she begins declaring healing, changing her lifestyle in response to God’s Word, and refuses to speak defeat.

2. Provision

  • Hope: “God has provided for all my needs.”
  • Faith: Giving even when finances are tight, applying for jobs with confidence, stewarding resources wisely.
  • Scripture: “My God shall supply all your need…” (Philippians 4:19)
  • Example: A man loses his job but continues giving generously. He updates his resume and applies for work daily, trusting God will open the right door.

3. Relationships

  • Hope: “I am enabled in Christ to live in peace.”
  • Faith: Reaching out in forgiveness, taking initiative to reconcile, praying for the person daily.
  • Scripture: “If possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” (Romans 12:18)
  • Example: A parent prays for a broken relationship with their child. In faith, they begin sending kind messages and apologize sincerely, even without guaranteed reciprocation.

4. Calling & Purpose

  • Hope: “God has a purpose for my life.”
  • Faith: Taking steps toward that calling—enrolling in classes, serving in small ways, speaking vision over your life.
  • Scripture: “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…” (Ephesians 2:10)
  • Example: A young woman feels called to teach but lacks credentials. She volunteers at a local school while studying at night, trusting God to guide her path.

5. Spiritual Growth

  • Hope: “I want to grow closer to God.”
  • Faith: Committing to daily Bible reading, joining a small group, fasting or setting aside time to hear from Him.
  • Scripture: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
  • Example: A new believer hopes to grow spiritually. Instead of just attending church on Sundays, they start reading the Bible daily and journaling what they learn.
