Redeemed

When a wrong has been committed, there is no way to erase it from history. The failure remains part of the record. What can change, however, is everything that follows. This is the power of redemption.

Redemption occurs when the penalty for wrongdoing is fully satisfied—when the debt created by guilt has been paid in full. In a court of law, this may take the form of a prison sentence or a financial penalty. Justice is served, and once the sentence has been completed, the guilty person has paid what was required. No further claim can be made against them for that offense.

At that point, they are free to move forward. The only way the failure can continue to limit or define them is if they choose to cling to that guilt and make it part of their identity. Redemption does not erase the past, but it removes its legal claim on the future.

This truth points us to a greater reality. Humanity inherited a fallen nature through Adam, making it certain that we would all fall short of God's glory through sin. Because of this, every person carries a burden of guilt that can only be removed when its penalty is fully paid.

The problem is that no amount of personal effort, time, sacrifice, or good works can ever satisfy that debt. The price is beyond our ability to pay. That is why we are all in need of a Redeemer. Jesus paid the price we never could. Through His willing sacrifice, He satisfied the penalty for sin once and for all. The blood He shed on the cross accomplished what no human effort ever could—it secured our redemption.

Now, through faith in Christ, every claim that sin once held against us has been fully answered. The debt has been paid. The penalty has been satisfied. Though we have all sinned and may still stumble, the cleansing power of His blood remains available to us. In Him, we can continually walk in the freedom and new life that redemption provides.

The memories of past failures may remain, but for those who have received Christ's redemption, those failures no longer possess the authority to condemn. Their power exists only if we continue to hold on to them in our minds and hearts.

Because of Christ, we have been redeemed from the guilt of sin, delivered from its penalty, and freed from its dominion. We are no longer defined by our failures but by His finished work. Redemption is God's declaration that the debt has been paid, justice has been satisfied, and a new future is now possible.

Notes

God’s passion and desire – redemption of His people

2 Samuel 7:23 (NLT) 23 What other nation on earth is like your people Israel? What other nation, O God, have you redeemed from slavery to be your own people? You made a great name for yourself when you redeemed your people from Egypt. You performed awesome miracles and drove out the nations and gods that stood in their way.

Jeremiah 31:11-14 (NLT) 11 For the LORD has redeemed Israel from those too strong for them. 12 They will come home and sing songs of joy on the heights of Jerusalem. They will be radiant because of the LORD’s good gifts—the abundant crops of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the healthy flocks and herds. Their life will be like a watered garden, and all their sorrows will be gone. 13 The young women will dance for joy, and the men—old and young—will join in the celebration. I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing. 14 The priests will enjoy abundance, and my people will feast on my good gifts. I, the LORD, have spoken!”

Redemption:

  • Payment in full for a sentence of condemnation and indebtedness
  • Provision of a promise of blessing
  • Though fully paid, only enjoyed by those who choose to walk in it

In its declaration and claim, redemption is received and activated

Psalms 107:2 (NLT) 2 Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.

Isaiah 48:20 (NLT) 20 Yet even now, be free from your captivity! Leave Babylon and the Babylonians. Sing out this message! Shout it to the ends of the earth! The LORD has redeemed his servants, the people of Israel.

Redemption – highly anticipated salvation through the coming Messiah

Luke 2:38 (KJV) 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Christ – the Redemption for all

Hebrews 9:12,27-28 (NLT) 12 With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever. 27 And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, 28 so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

While sin condemns, redemption justifies

Romans 3:24 (NKJV) 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Romans 3:24 (TLB) 24 yet now God declares us “not guilty” of offending him if we trust in Jesus Christ, who in his kindness freely takes away our sins.

Romans 3:24 (TPT) 24 Yet through his powerful declaration of acquittal, God freely gives away his righteousness. His gift of love and favor now cascades over us, all because Jesus, the Anointed One, has liberated us from the guilt, punishment, and power of sin!

Only boast other than Redemption is powerless and ineffective

1 Corinthians 1:28-31 (TPT) 28 He chose the lowly, the laughable in the world’s eyes—nobodies—so that he would shame the somebodies. For he chose what is regarded as insignificant in order to supersede what is regarded as prominent, 29 so that there would be no place for prideful boasting in God’s presence. 30 For it is not from man that we draw our life but from God as we are being joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. And now he is our God-given wisdom, our virtue, our holiness, and our redemption. 31 And this fulfills what is written: If anyone boasts, let him only boast in all that the Lord has done!

How does reality of Redemption become experienced blessing?

By the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1:13-14 (TPT) 13 And because of him, when you who are not Jews heard the revelation of truth, you believed in the wonderful news of salvation. Now we have been stamped with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. 14 He is given to us like an engagement ring is given to a bride, as the first installment of what’s coming! He is our hope-promise of a future inheritance which seals us until we have all of redemption’s promises and experience complete freedom—all for the supreme glory and honor of God!

Ephesians 4:30 (TPT) 30 The Holy Spirit of God has sealed you in Jesus Christ until you experience your full salvation. So never grieve the Spirit of God or take for granted his holy influence in your life.

When it is your song, its gift becomes your destiny

Isaiah 35:10 (TLB) 10 These, the ransomed of the Lord, will go home along that road to Zion, singing the songs of everlasting joy. For them all sorrow and all sighing will be gone forever; only joy and gladness will be there.

Revelation 5:9-10 (TPT)

9 And they were all singing this new song of praise to the Lamb: “Because you were slaughtered for us, you are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals. Your blood was the price paid to redeem us. You purchased us to bring us to God out of every tribe, language, people group, and nation. 10 You have chosen us to serve our God and formed us into a kingdom of priests who reign on the earth.”

Prayer of Redemption

Father, I thank You for Your great love that pursued me when I could not save myself. Thank You for sending Jesus to pay the full price for my redemption. I rejoice that through His blood every debt has been satisfied, every accusation answered, and every barrier removed. Today I receive by faith all that Christ has purchased for me.
