Revelation of Goodness

From the menu items at a favorite restaurant, to career opportunities, the choice of a lifelong companion, or even deciding where in the world to live—life is filled with decisions based on what appears to be “good.” Our past experiences often shape that determination. If we’ve been there before and found satisfaction, our perspective is already formed. The opinions and experiences of others can also influence us, creating either positive expectations or cautionary concerns.

Yet even when a choice seems good, there is no guarantee it will produce the outcome we expect. That food or drink that promises pleasure may bring only temporary satisfaction while creating long-term consequences. The job that appears ideal on paper can become a source of burden and frustration. The person who seems perfectly attractive and compatible may present unexpected challenges over time. Even living in a place with all the right resources does not automatically result in a good life. How wonderful it would be if every decision came with certainty about how good it truly is.

There are certainly blessings and benefits that qualify as good and bring joy through positive experiences. Yet Jesus taught that only God is truly good. In fact, He redirected any claim of goodness from Himself to the Father. Every choice Jesus made was good because it flowed from complete alignment with God’s will.

Through the new creation we receive in Christ, we are given that same opportunity—to align ourselves with the One who is truly good and to bear good fruit through our choices. Through His Word and the voice of His Spirit within us, we are continually called toward holiness, righteousness, and purity. As we submit to His wisdom and His expressed will, goodness becomes established in both our hearts and our actions.

One of the greatest demonstrations of God’s goodness is the mercy He extends through every misguided choice we make while He continues the work of transforming us into His likeness. His goodness sustains us, and His mercy covers us. Together they follow us all the days of our lives, enabling us to live and not die in the land of the living.

Notes

Good:

טוֹב - ṭôb - tobe

When something is good, it is:

  • functioning properly,
  • being complete or fit for its purpose,
  • contributing harmoniously to the created order.
  • promoting life, wholeness, flourishing, beauty, and proper order.

Fainting vs revelation

Psalms 27:13 (NKJV) 13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.

Deferring all goodness to God, enables its beholding and emulation.

Mark 10:17-18 17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.

What is more than just a moment, but for eternity only comes from God.

James 1:17 17 Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

Revelation of God’s goodness and mercy till it’s chosen is in continual pursuit - Goodness of God

Psalms 23:6 (NKJV) 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

Mercy - God’s goodness that draws us to repentance.

Romans 2:4 (TPT) 4 Do the riches of his extraordinary kindness make you take him for granted and despise him? Haven’t you experienced how kind and understanding he has been to you? Don’t mistake his tolerance for acceptance. Do you realize that all the wealth of his extravagant kindness is meant to melt your heart and lead you into repentance?

In each choice and application of God’s ways is the experience of freedom in His goodness.

John 8:31-32 (TPT) 31 Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, “When you continue to embrace all that I teach, you prove that you are my true followers. 32 For if you embrace the truth, it will release more freedom into your lives.”

In our choice of Him there is revelation of His goodness with blessing.

Psalms 34:8 (NKJV) 8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Transformation comes with proven revelation of His goodness

Romans 12:2 (NLT) 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
