WHAT DID JESUS SAY ABOUT DIVORCE?

SERMON TEXT: Matthew 5:31-32; 19:1-12

Summary: Divorce should be rare among God’s people. Jesus loves the family and purity. The Lord desires reconciliation for His people as a picture of what grace can do.

1. GETTING IN - God's Design for Marriage

The Foundation - A Rock Solid Marriage

Psalm 11:3; Genesis 1:27; 2:23-25

Note Genesis 2:24

  • “leave” = BREAK AWAY from the confines of immediate family.
  • “hold fast / cleave” = BOND together like the fusing of metals
  • “become one flesh” = BE SOMETHING TOGETHER that they cannot be apart

2. GETTING OUT: Man's Design for Divorce

Deuteronomy 24:1-4 2 Schools of thought: Shammai = Conservative / Hillel = Liberal

Sinful, selfish desires will cause PERSONAL PREFERENCES to trump a COVENANT COMMITMENT!

Matthew 19

The Pharisees were interested in the Details of Divorce. Jesus was interesetd in the Covenant of Marriage.

3. MOVING FORWARD - GOD'S WAY IS BEST!

  • We are for Biblical marriage.
  • We are against divorce.
  • We are for one another.
