Finding Joy In Humility

Finding Joy

By Scott Alexander, December 08, 2024

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

  1. You Take Everything Personally
  2. Your Feelings and Ideas Matter Most
  3. You Always Think the Other Person Needs to Apologize or Change
  4. You Tend to Be Negative and Critical Rather than Positive and Grateful

Humility is having a right view of yourself

Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus: “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

You can only love others as much as you love yourself.

Philippians 2:6-8 NLT Even though Jesus was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges. He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Philippians 2:6-8 MSG Jesus had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.

Philippians 2:3-5 Don’t be selfish. Don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

The argument of lesser to greater The argument of greater to lesser

Matthew 6:25-26 I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

If even Jesus, God incarnate, creator of the world … Jesus who is far greater, would humble himself … can’t you find it in yourself to choose a life of humility?

Humility is not thinking less of yourself … it is thinking of yourself less.

Philippians 2:3 Don’t be selfish. Don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

Look for an opportunity to put someone ahead of yourself

Repent of your pride and selfishness
