Call to Worship - Rev. Dana Seiler

Leader: First we hear the sound …

People: Like the rush of a violent wind.

Leader: Then we see tongues of fire …

People: Resting upon each person.

Leader: Then we feel the Spirit …

People: Giving us words to speak.

Leader: The Spirit blesses all …

People: Young and old, women and men.

Leader: Come Holy Spirit …

People: Renew us this day and make us your own.

Prayer of Confession & Declaration of Forgiveness

Loving God, we confess that we have stifled your Spirit within us. You have sent us the Spirit of love, but we have preferred to dislike those who oppose us. You have sent us the Spirit of joy, but we have taken your gifts for granted and been ungrateful. You have sent us the Spirit of peace, but we have allowed our selfishness to cause division and disharmony. You have sent us the Spirit of patience, but we have been worried and anxious when we have not seen immediate results from our efforts. You have sent us the Spirit of gentleness, but we have been insensitive to the feelings of others. Forgive us, merciful God. Teach us how much we need the power of your Spirit in our lives; and breathe new life into us; for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

Leader: Spirit of the living God, visit us again on this day of Pentecost.

**People: Come, Holy Spirit. **

Leader: Like a rushing wind that sweeps away all barriers,

**People: come, Holy Spirit. **

Leader: Like tongues of fire that set our hearts aflame,

People: come, Holy Spirit.

Leader: With speech that unites the Babel of our tongues,

People: come, Holy Spirit.

Leader: With love that overlaps the boundaries of race and nation,

People: come, Holy Spirit.

Leader: With power from above to make our weakness strong,

People: come, Holy Spirit.

Affirmation of Faith

We trust in God, the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women, men, and people to all ministries of the Church.

In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives. Amen.
