Sermon - “Obstacles in the Way” - Rev. David Bonnema

What is one thing you learned from the drama?

Three Obstacles to Discipleship:

  1. Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has place to lay his head.” -Luke 9:58

Discipleship is not easy. There will be challenges along the way.

  1. He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” -Luke 9:59-60

Discipleship is urgent. The time is now, don’t delay!

  1. Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” -Luke 9:61-62 There is much in life that may distract us from discipleship.

Does it feel like I’m just squeezing God into my schedule?

Prayer of Confession

Holy God, we confess that we do not follow You with all our hearts. We share with You the pieces of our lives that are convenient. We forget that we are called, invited, and loved for all that we are, including our messes, our beauty, our faith, and our doubt. Forgive us, O God, and give us a heart that longs to walk alongside You in this beautiful life that You have so freely given us, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Doxology

Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord’s Prayer

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed ** I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.**
