Sermon - “What Must I Do?”

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit life? -Mark 10:17

The man wants to know what he can do to earn eternal life. He even claims to have followed all of the commandments!

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” —Mark 10:21

Why does Jesus ask this man to do this?

God’s kingdom is something to , not to achieve.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is , but not with God; all things are possible with God.” -Mark 10:27

We must rely on God, not on ourselves or any human achievements.

Leader: We know that God is always with us,

People: We come this morning to remind ourselves that we are with God.

Leader: In this time of worship, may our hearts be glad;

People: May our souls rejoice and our spirits draw closer to God.

Leader: In God’s presence there is fullness of joy.

People: We are so glad to be together today in God’s presence.

Hymn - “God of Grace and God of Glory” - v 1,3,4,5 #420

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, our news is full of the images of war and refugees and suffering. It hurts to look at the death and destruction, so we turn away, thinking that there is nothing we can do that will make a difference. We forget, O Lord, that You are with us, and each act of kindness or generosity puts Your love into this broken world and makes it a better place. Remind us that with You, all things are possible, in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
