Sermon - "Is Church Necessary?” - Rev. David Bonnema

Today’s Question: Do you need to attend church to be a Christian?

The goal of church is to create Christians who are equipped to live faithfully in the world.

καταρτισμὸν (equip) = to , to bring to a condition of fitness

This will continue until we all come to such in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. —Ephesians 4:12-13

What does it look like to be an immature Christian? (Ephesians 4:14)

What does it look like to be a mature Christian? (Ephesians 4:15)

From Christ the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in , as each part does its work. —Ephesians 4:16

Prelude

Welcome - Rev. David Bonnema
Call to Worship - Karen Brailey

Leader: We gather today collectively in pursuit of the Sacred.

People: Together, we make up the body of Christ.

Leader: Wherever one of us is in pain our whole body aches.

People: Whenever one of us is cut off the whole body is wounded.

Leader: We need each other’s shared gifts and talents.

People: May we become one in service to each other and the world.

Prayer of Confession

Loving God, we come to You to confess that we don’t always want to come to church. We think we have better things, or more important things, to do with our day. Forgive us for not realizing that the most important thing we can do is worship You; that the time spent with one another is what creates the body of Christ; and that we are so much better together than we are apart. Give us the desire to always seek You out in community, through Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
